Other Name: okra

Period/Seasonal Colour: Fruits are dark green in colour, smooth, lender and slender.

Height: 3 to 4 feet apart.

Where To Plant: Determine how to start your seeds. If you live in a place with hot summers and mild winters, it's easiest to plant okra in your garden patch, rather than starting it indoors

When To Plant: spring or early summer

How To Plant: Sow your seeds 4 inches (10.2 cm) apart at a depth of 1⁄2 inch (1.3 cm). If you started your seedsindoors, handle the seedlings very carefully and plantthem 1 foot (0.3 m) apart in rows 3 feet (0.9 m) apart.

Added Benefits: Okra contains potassium, vitamin B, vitamin C, folic acid, and calcium. It's low in calories and has a high dietary fiber content. Popular forms of okra for medicinal purposes include okra water, okra peels, and powdered seeds.

Tips: Okra shares gardening space well with Swiss chard and cucumbers. When okra follows a legume crop it benefits from the accumulated soil nitrogen.
